How to Make Your Heating Fuel Last Longer

Every winter, it feels like heating bills go up. What if you could reduce your heating bill a little by stretching your fuel? It’s easier than you might think.

Get a Tune-Up
First, have your heating system checked out and repaired if necessary. When your boiler isn’t functioning at its peak, you’ll end up using far more oil than you really need to. A tune-up is just what you need to ensure you get as much use as possible out of your heating oil.
Of course, if your boiler is over 15 years old, you should consider buying a new system. This will reduce your heating oil usage by up to 25%.

Turn Down the Thermostat
This may seem obvious, but it’s something that many people don’t do. You should lower the heat when you’ll be out, since there is no reason to heat a home where there is no one. As long as it’s above freezing, your house will be alright and you’ll save money. You should also lower the heat at night, which has the added benefit of helping you sleep better.

Use the Sun’s Heat
Open your blinds during the day to let the sunlight in and heat up the house a little. This will reduce the amount of heating oil needed during this time. At night, close the blinds to prevent heat from escaping through the windows. By using the natural heat from the sun, you can reduce the amount of oil burned in the home and save quite a bit.

Insulate Your Home
It’s always a good idea to ensure your home is properly insulated, but this is even more important during the winter months. You should check your attic in particular, as heat rises. If there is little or no insulation up there, you’ll end up with all the heat going straight out your roof. You should be able to add more insulation and thus protect your home from losing too much heat and wasting oil.

Stop Draughts
Draughts can also cause your boiler to burn more fuel and they are most common around windows and doors. You can use sealants to prevent air from coming into the home or heat from escaping, around the windows. It’s also possible to find special seals that attach to the lower part of your exterior doors to block air from coming in under the door.

Encourage Heat Circulation
Your radiator needs to be completely free to circulate hot hair. This means you should avoid placing furniture in a way that will block the heat from the radiator. Instead, consider investing in a small fan that can help with heat circulation and move the heat around the room.
Reducing your heating oil use is usually a combination of making certain your boiler is working efficiently and reducing the need for more heat. Contact Southern Fuels for more information today.
