Affordable Ways to Keep your Home Warm in Winter

The UK isn’t exactly known for fantastic weather and now that summer is over, we can expect the temperatures to drop as the nights become increasingly darker and longer. It’s not all doom and gloom though, and many people enjoy the thought of cosy evenings at home while the weather rages outside.

Of course, this is only possible if your home is nice and warm, but the thought of large heating bills means many people might come to dread the winter months. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep your home warm without running up enormous heating bills, you just have to know a few simply smart techniques to keep as much heat in the house as possible.

If you’re looking for affordable ways to keep the family cosy and warm during the colder months, then read on for our handy guide below.

Layer up
Most people have been told to ‘just put a jumper on’ by their parents or grandparents at some point in life, but layering up really is the best way to keep warm. If you don’t want to put a bulky jumper on, try thermal vests or chunky socks, and look for warm fabrics like wool, cashmere or thick cotton.

Invest in thick curtains
Curtains in heavy fabrics, like velvet or brocade, are highly effective at trapping heat in a room, or you could add a layer of insulating fabric to your existing curtains if they’re of a thinner material. High-quality curtains help prevent heat from escaping, reduce condensation and ensure your rooms stay nice and cosy
Block out draughts
While curtains do a lot to block out draughts, don’t forget gaps underneath doors either. Draught excluders are easily available and affordable, or you can even make your own. Also, consider adding self-adhesive rubber seals around doors and windows to stop any cold air penetrating through cracks.

Check your boiler
It’s important to get your boiler serviced annually, but if it’s over 10 years old you might want to think about a replacement. Newer boilers tend to be more energy efficient, and can produce the same amount of heat while using much less energy; keeping your home warm and saving you money too. A new boiler also drastically reduces the chances of needing costly repairs during the winter season.
